Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist is heading back to London this September 2024.
The musical is getting a full run at The Other Palace theatre in London, following a series of UK concerts, and a short run in 2023 at the Lyric Theatre in the West End.
Initial casting includes the return of Zizi Strallen (Mary Poppins, Strictly Ballroom) as Marie Antoinette, and Renée Lamb (Be More Chill, SIX) as Jeanne, with further casting to be announced.
Combining a multi-genre pop score with 18th century France, Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist, retells a story that sparked a revolution.
The mixed genre show pushes the boundaries of what a musical should look like; combining a musical, with a gig, and even ballet, to take audiences to 18th Century France and the court of King Louis and Marie Antoinette.
Cake is directed by Bronagh Lagan (Cruise) and choreographed by Christopher Tendai (Closer To Heaven), following the original production’s direction and choreography by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie (The Artist).
The show has a book by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Emilia) and a score by Tasha Taylor Johnson and Jack McManus.
The creative team will also include set and costume design by Sami Fendall, lighting design by Joshie Harriette and casting by Will Burton.
The show started its life as part of the new musical festival MTFestUK, and ran at the Turbine Theatre in London in January and February 2023, as well as a UK tour to The Lowry Salford and the Curve in Leicester.
Paul Taylor-Mills, Artistic Director of The Other Palace, said in a statement: “I’m delighted we are bringing CAKE to The Other Palace for a full run, as this brand-new genre busting musical continues to evolve following on from its try-out last year. Completing our 2024 programme of new musicals and developing work, from Cruel Intentions the Musical at the start of the year to Babies currently receiving rave reviews, and Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World over the summer, the London Premiere of The Lightning Thief, this will literally be the icing on the CAKE!”
Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist will play The Other Palace theatre in London from 13 September to 10 November 2024.
